The difference and similarities in our 2-ply and 3-ply toilet paper

The differences

The basics

The obvious difference between the 2-ply and 3-ply toilet paper is, of course, the number of layers that make up the paper. With the 2-ply toilet paper, two layers of paper are combined into one sheet, and with the 3-ply toilet paper, it is three layers. But of course, you already knew this. But did you also know that this makes a bigger difference than you might think?  

Fun fact: Our toilet paper is not stuck together with glue, but our paper has an embossed strip on the sides (''knurling'' for those in the know), which serves for layer adhesion. This is done with a water-based liquid! Super durable, in other words.

Comfort

The number one factor people look at when buying toilet paper is the comfort and softness of the paper. Logical, if you ask us. That is why we like to respond to this and make sure there is a punch on the toilet paper that makes the paper soft for your bottom. In general, the rule is, that the more sheets are joined together, the softer the sheet. This is why we also have the 3-ply toilet paper, for our toilet king(s). The similarities

Strength

Besides comfort being important to many people, toilet paper strength also plays a big factor. Because let's face it, there's nothing more annoying than paper that tears off... That's why we've made sure our toilet paper is super strong. But what often happens is that if the paper is strong, it doesn't flush properly. That's why we did a study on how well our bamboo paper flushes. Because properly degradable toilet paper is kinder to the environment, as it disintegrates quickly and causes less impact on ecosystems. So this makes it more sustainable.

Our research began with the PAS3 test method. This method revolves around the simple question: ''How does our bamboo toilet paper hold up when you flush it?''. This test was conducted with water flows similar to those in narrow sewers. In this, we tested whether more than 80% of our bamboo toilet paper could pass through a 25mm sieve after 30 minutes. The good news was that our toilet paper passed this test and could be flushed through sewer systems without any problems! So, our paper is not only strong and soft, but also environmentally and sewer-friendly.

Sustainability

Besides comfort and toilet paper strength, we at The Good Roll are always concerned with sustainability. This is our top priority. Fortunately, our customers think the same way! All our toilet paper varieties are made of 100% recycled paper, kraft or 100% bamboo paper. They are also free of chlorine, dyes and fragrances. So they are always sustainable products and good for the environment. In addition, 50% of the net profit goes to our foundation. With our foundation, we build and maintain toilets in Ghana, for people for whom this is not a given. And we provide hygiene education in schools. So you buy soft, strong and sustainable toilet paper. And this while also making an impact. A win-win situation.

Besides, you have probably noticed that our rolls are not white, but have a nice golden/brown colour. The reason is that we do not use chlorine to make our rolls white, because that is not necessary at all! Is this less your style anyway? Then we have a very nice wrapper for each type of toilet paper, printed with organic ink. Totally good for the environment!

Continuous improvement and development

We are constantly improving our products. This is why we have recently added a 3-ply version of our bamboo variant to our range. This means we now offer both 2- and 3-ply bamboo toilet paper! But we don't stop here. We are constantly coming up with new variants of our paper. You can think of a different figure on the roll, making your roll stick together even better. Or making our toilet paper more flushable.

We are also switching to kraft paper instead of recycled paper. The choice for kraft paper is based on the fact that its production is less energy- and water-intensive than that of traditional recycled toilet paper. An important advantage of kraft paper is that it does not need to be bleached, so the rolls retain their natural colour. This provides a striking contrast to white toilet paper, often treated with bleaches to achieve that bright colour.
